Let Me Entertain You

Trends across categories—from liquor and food to home furnishings—reveal that entertaining at home is popular among Millennials, and my new line for Vanguard Furniture serves up casual entertainment with style.

It’s a collection of tailored upholstery, versatile case goods, and iconic occasional tables are designed with casual entertaining in mind. The line includes a rolling bar on casters, a bar cabinet, and a variety of portable martini tables, one of which is featured in Traditional Home this month – the Jean Paul Martini Table.

The Jean-Paul Martini Table is the perfect example of the Blended Modern concept bridging across many different styles of design. It’s simple round forms, with the top that cantilevers over the base, is modern in form, but it feels at home as an accent to any style including traditional and transitional.

My younger clients are entertaining at home more than ever—they love serving specialty cocktails and sharing favorite foods they’ve made or discovered. In their own home, they can create the whole vibe they want their friends to experience, including the music and overall ambience. It’s something they can’t control as much when they go out and they feel it’s much more memorable and personal.

Gilles Bogaert, CFO of Pernod Ricard, the parent company of brands including Absolut and Jameson, has noted that “People, more and more, want to have good moments with their friends at home” and there is a growing movement to blur the line between entertaining at home and going out.

Vanguard Furniture’s President, Andy Bray remarks, “that feeling of easy entertaining captured in Barry Goralnick’s new line has even inspired us to pair every piece with a signature cocktail.” In an increasingly competitive and repetitive retail environment, Vanguard is providing retailers something unique that fills a profitable niche. It’s the kind of affordable indulgence that leads to an impulse purchase, but the kind of quality and design that represents luxury of enduring value that represents luxury of enduring value ”

Cocktails (Tables) for Two

The new Barry Goralnick Spencer table for Vanguard Furniture is featured in New York Cottages & Gardens’ October 2106 issue.

The Spencer was nominated for the prestigious IDA award (Innovation in Design) for 2016.  It is named after Spencer Tracy (all the pieces in our Vanguard collection are named after movie stars).

All our clients prefer a cocktail table with a lower shelf because of its useful storage and display. Our table meets that need with vertical storage instead of flat.  It is the embodiment of the concept in the popular book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, which recommends things be stored vertically.

Round tables are gracious for entertaining, no corners make better friends. And you won’t need those baby bumpers that square tables necessitate.

The 48″ diameter Spencer Table is the perfect size to complement larger sofas and sectionals. All the interest occurs under the glass so you only need minimal, if any, objects on the top.  You’re not always moving things around to set up to entertain. It makes dusting easy.

There are two unexpected inspirations for this table. A vintage holder of nuts and bolts from an old hardware shop served as an inspiration (pictured below).  The idea of this  form transformed into the concept of a table. The finishing touch is the hardware screw-head detail on the top of the “fins”, which evokes the popular Cartier Love Bracelet. This is the kind of elegant jewelry detail that ties this table into the rest of the collection.

Dancing on the Ceiling

Two of my favorite designers, Suysel Cunningham and Anne Foster of Tilton Fenwick debuted their new bath at the Traditional Home Hamptons Showhouse in Southampton, currently on view.

Their bathroom features my Choros chandelier from Visual Comfort over the bathtub. It looks terrific when looking up from a long soak.
