The Challenge:
Create a modern apartment for a family for whom we had previously designed a very traditional Park Avenue apartment.

I accompanied this favorite client on a search to find an apartment for her, which includes separate but adjoining room for her ten-year old twins. We selected an Upper East Side glass tower because it has space for them to grow, it could accommodate the ideal layout, and had modern amenities.

The Vision:
Create a 21st Century loft-like feeling, with the intimacy and privacy of a pre-War apartment.

Create a worry-free space that could function for adults including large and small parties and children without having to change anything.

The Process:
We opened up several walls to create a loft feeling: the living room is open to the den; the home office is open to the living space and the girls’ rooms are open to each other creating a suite for the twins. Working with the clients, we designed a customized home office, fitted with walnut cabinetry that met their specific needs. A terrace that runs the length of the apartment provides an outdoor living space.

The furniture is a blend of custom-designed pieces and vintage items that were reconceived. Many of the lamps are from my collection at Visual Comfort.

All carpets are from the Barry Goralnick Collection at Stark. I played with the scale or the patterns and color — soft green/blues with pops of coral and teal give continuity as you look from one room into another.

The palette is serene and comfortable. Bold color is reserved for the girls’ rooms, for which we got the their input

The Result:
Success equals living with ease.
