West Side Maisonette ( of )
The owner of this apartment, Linda Hirshman, is a remarkable client. She is an attorney who tried 3 cases before the Supreme Court, a professor of philosophy, an acclaimed author, as well as being an avid patron of the arts and an art collector, and superb pianist.
We combined 2 apartments and colonized some of the public hall to create this garden apartment. In addition to gut-renovating the indoor spaces, we gut-renovated the garden outside.
During demolition we discovered that we had 15 foot ceilings. This enabled us to create a ground floor loft that soars. The exterior was conceived as a private park to entertain and write. The 12 foot long mirror extends the space even further.
The living room/dining room opens entirely to the park. Her office was conceived so she can look out across the room to the garden. It gives the feeling of being “captain of the ship.” The kitchen has the same aspect, so one is never far from the scene during a dinner party.
There are two bedrooms and baths and ample storage for many beautiful collections.
